In the field of technology design, the attention to users' needs is of fundamental importance and it is taken into account by all the software design and engineering methodologies. What distinguishes Participatory Design is the central role of users who are not simply consulted but also take responsibility within the project.
Born concurrently with the industrial automation processes in Scandinavia during the 70s, this approach can be seen as a democratisation of technology design or as a way that pragmatically reduces the risk of failure in implementing new systems.
We will make a quick review of some techniques for user engagement, discussing their motivations and uses.
