  • Participatory Design

    Polo Ferrari 2, Room 178

    In the field of technology design, the attention to users' needs is of fundamental importance and it is taken into account by all the software design and engineering methodologies. What distinguishes Participatory Design is the central role of users who are not simply consulted but also take responsibility within the project.

    Born concurrently with the industrial automation processes in Scandinavia during the 70s, this approach can be seen as a democratisation of technology design or as a way that pragmatically reduces the risk of failure in implementing new systems.

    We will make a quick review of some techniques for user engagement, discussing their motivations and uses.

    Keywords: Participatory Design; Design; Interfaces

  • Ultrasound and medicine

    Polo Ferrari 1, Room 237

    Ultrasound (mechanical waves with frequencies above the human auditory range) are nowadays widely used in medicine as the basis of various diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Some classic examples are prenatal and cardiac ultrasound imaging. Beyond these two examples, ultrasound technologies find an ever-increasing number of applications: from the diagnosis of pulmonary pathologies, the functional imaging of the brain, the visualization and localization of tumors, to lithotripsy (where ultrasound waves are used for the fragmentation and removal of kidney stones). The Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science offers a course dedicated to these topics (Ultrasound Technologies for Medical Applications) within the Master's Degree in Information and Communications Engineering and has an experimental laboratory equipped with clinical and research ultrasound scanners.

    Keywords: Ultrasound Imaging, Image Formation and Processing, Ultrasound-scanner, Signal processing.

  • Networking and localization for the Internet of Things

    Polo Ferrari 2, in front of Room 151

    Modern low-power radio technologies offer unprecedented opportunities for Internet of Things scenarios, in which people, things, vehicles are dynamically interconnected. Some of these technologies, in particular ultra-wideband (UWB) radios, besides providing communication also enable devices to estimate the distance among themselves and therefore determine their position. This type of localization has countless applications, especially in those cases where GPS is not applicable, e.g., inside buildings or (as in one of the projects demonstrated) for the navigation of space rovers.

    • modelling languages, methods and tools for the representation (through the creation of models) of such systems;
    • automated analysis techniques for the verification of properties such as security, privacy, trust, etc. The verification is performed both on isolated properties and at their intersection to find trade-offs, identify potential conflicts as well as security or privacy breaches, which might occur when a socio-technical system changes from the organisational or technical point of view;
    • techniques based on multi-agent systems for the monitoring and managing emergencies;
    • optimisation algorithms to support decision-making processes.

    Keywords: Security and privacy requirements engineering; Automated reasoning; large-scale socio-technical systems.

  • Augmented Reality and Augmented Learning

    Polo Ferrari 1, Room 256

    More and more we hear in the media about Augmented Reality, especially the one dedicated to mobile devices.This innovative technology is considered a great promise for the future. Augmented reality is able to merge countless virtual worlds generated by the computer with the real world, so that the "augmented" experience of reality is richer, more interesting and more fun. Many sectors are now using augmented reality: from medicine to robotics, architecture, art, without forgetting the world of games. We will present a short demo in augmented reality that shows one of these enriched worlds. Students will have the opportunity to wear the Microsoft Hololens device and interact with a virtual assistant who will introduce them to the world of holograms in an augmented environment created specifically for education and e-learning.

  • Talking to machines: from Research Labs, to the Cloud to Your Living Room

    Polo Ferrari 2, Room 150

    Talking to machines is not evoking science fiction scenes as it used to be in the sixties or even the nineties, any more. In our research and system evaluations , we address questions important for the society from the researchers to the practitioners to policy makers to users: What type of fundamental research in dialogue research do we need to address? How can we keep a research flow from academic labs to industry labs? What types of next-generation conversational interfaces should we develop? How can we build dialogue systems that are transparent about their capabilities? How can the user community build trust in conversational machines? What ethical rules should conversational systems follow? How do we make transparent the inherent bias in data-driven machine learning algorithms embedded in conversational systems?

  • Cyber security Lab

    Polo Ferrari 2, Room 131

    The use of biological data for the purpose of identity management is termed as biometric recognition or simply biometrics. Physical (based on physical characteristics, e.g., face, fingerprint, etc.) and behavioral (based on behaviors, e.g., keystroke, gait, etc.) are the most popular types. Biometrics has got all the potential to completely replace PINs and passwords because they can be stolen, forgotten, and shared. Biometric authentication has been studied for a long time. Large-scale commercial deployments already exist, such as the fingerprint sensors on laptops and smartphones, however, these deployments require explicit user action, hence result in annoying users. As a result, most of the research about transparent, implicit and unobservable authentication for smartphone's security and access control is based on behavioral biometrics.

    In this demo, we will show some of our behavioral-biometric-based smartphone user authentication solutions.
